About Chloroform

Chloroform is a clear, non-combustible, volatile chlorinated hydrocarbon with a sweet smell. It is denser than water and is just somewhat dissolvable in it. Due to its lethal impacts on the heart, liver and other internal organs as well as its suspected carcinogenic properties, chloroform is not currently used as an anesthetic. 

Also known as trichloromethane, chloroform is used in the industrial manufacture of many pesticides, rubber, resin, wax, and other substances. It is a helpful reagent in reactions such as the Reimer–Tiemann and the Kharasch addition. Deuterated chloroform (CDCl3) or deuterochloroform is the most common solvent for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.
