 Our Approach

As part of our commitment to reduce our environmental impacts, we have collaborated with internal and external stakeholders to establish a packaging sustainability framework that defines our strategy for driving significant improvements in the sustainability of our packaging by 2022. We call it the SMASH Packaging plan.

We identified three focus areas with the greatest opportunity for improvement that we call “Pillars.” Within each Pillar, we identified many potential opportunities for improvement and, based on consultation with internal and external packaging experts, we identified four “Goals” to focus on. We have established specific 2022 targets for each of these goals.

 Our Actions and Results

We are implementing new sustainability standards and guidelines for the development of more sustainable product packaging. We are implementing specific improvement plans to improve sustainability characteristics of our existing product and distribution packaging. We will monitor our progress towards our goals and report them annually.

 Our 2022 Goals and Targets

Shrink – Reduce Amount of Packaging

SHRINK – Reduce Amount of PackagingOur aim is to eliminate the use of packaging that is excessive in size or weight which unnecessarily consumes more resources, increases energy use and air emissions during transportation. Excess packaging is also undesirable for our customers since there are costs associated with the management and disposal of the packaging.

Our 2022 targets are:

  • New product packaging aligned with our standards for weight and volume
  • 20 key improvement projects for existing packaging
  • 20% reduction of air space in distribution boxes

Secure – Achieve Zero Deforestation

SECURE – Achieve Zero DeforestationDeforestation is a significant source of global warming and is a threat to biodiversity. Our aim is to ensure that the wood and fiber-based packaging materials that we use do not contribute to deforestation.

Our 2022 targets are:

  • New product packaging aligned with our zero deforestation standards
  • 90% of existing packaging aligned with our zero deforestation standards
  • 100% of packaging from deforestation-risk countries certified sustainably sourced

Switch – Improve Plastic Sustainability

SWITCH – Improve Plastic SustainabilityConventional plastic packaging has several sustainability issues associated with it. Our aim is to improve sustainability of plastic materials used in packaging applications, including increasing the use of materials with lower environmental impacts and reducing the use of plastics produced with chemicals of concern.

Our 2022 targets are:

  • New product packaging aligned with our plastic sustainability standards
  • 20 improvement projects to replace existing plastic packaging by more sustainable solutions
  • 20% reduction of Expanded Polystyrene (EPS)

Save – Maximize Recycling

SWITCH – Improve Plastic SustainabilityOur aim is to maximize recycling of our packaging materials by eliminating the use of packaging materials that are not compatible with recycling and by providing our customers with recycling guidance for all our packaging materials.


Our 2022 targets are:

  • New product packaging aligned with our standards for recyclability
  • 100% of fiber-based packaging not compatible with recycling, replaced
  • 100% of products with packaging recycling/disposal guidance

 Our Case Studies

Tackling Polystyrene Usage

We previously used Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) for packing glass reagent bottles for shipment.

We have replaced EPS by molded pulp packaging material for some of our packaging  configurations. Today this represents 3,000,000 inserts annually and we continue to work on additional replacement projects.

Less and better plastic for cut disc membranes new packaging system

The packaging system for cut disc filters has been re-engineered for usability and reduced environmental impact.

The newly redesigned packaging system is manufactured using 22 percent less plastic, and replaces polystyrene with polypropylene that has a 43% lower global warming potential than polystyrene.

Titripac® - The Clever Packaging Solution

We designed a smart packaging system that improves performance by preventing contamination and allowing for a direct connection to a titrator. It also reduced overall packaging weight, increased usage of recyclable packaging materials and decreased chemical product waste.

Bulk Packaging for Millistak+® Pods:

We developed a bulk packaging solution for Millistak+® Pods with the aim to optimize transport and reception processes as well as to reduce waste. Bulk packaging configuration includes 27 Pods in 3 boxes with 9 Pods per layer on 1 pallet. It allows to reduce the amount of packaging per unit by 24% compared to standard packaging. In 2019, this translated to a total of 4 tons of corrugated cardboard being saved.

Reducing the amount of dunnage material used in distribution

In our Darmstadt, Germany, distribution center, we reduced the grammage of crumpled paper used as dunnage material from 100g/m2 to 80g/m2. This initiative allows to save 14 tons of paper annually while maintaining the same level of performance in protecting our products.
